Creating Your Brand: It’s Easier Than You Think

February 23, 2011

Due to limited resources, small business owners often get so caught up in the day to day operations and tasks required in starting a business that they often overlook the importance of something that can be so simple to create and grow yet has such a powerful impact on the business – the brand! Every business model – from a brick and mortar laundromat to an online graphic design studio to a consulting firm – stands to benefit immensely from having a remarkable and memorable brand.

While you may think that your business idea is greatest idea on earth and that your sheer genius alone will ensure the success of your business, keep in mind that competition is inescapable. Whether your model is entirely unique in your market or you plan to open a sandwich shop where you are sure to be met with stiff competition, cultivating a memorable brand will make you memorable to your target audience and more likely to succeed.

The easiest way to begin creating a remarkable brand is to ensure that you have a strong presence in social media. Social media is largely free and is highly effective at keeping the target audience interested in what you have to offer.

The key outlets for social media today are blogging, Twitter, Facebook and, in certain situations, Myspace. Create the your profiles and start connecting with people. You will find that connecting comes quite easily once you begin to pick up steam. However, it is important to note that you do not want to use these powerful tools to push you offerings into potential clients and customers as this will only serve to turn people away. Instead, create an online presence that places you in the position of authority in whatever industry you may be operating by way of sharing or creating remarkable content. If you are in the dog grooming business for example, blog and tweet about activities to do with your dog in the area or about tips for keeping your pet healthy. This will keep potential clients and customers listening to what you have to say on a regular basis. When the time comes to get your furry friend groomed, you can bet that you will be the first option that pops into their minds.
